Top AI executives call for slower frontier development, yet no company has shown what 'slower' means with an actual model delay — and nobody appears willing to slow the race.
The AI industry's most prominent executives have argued publicly that frontier development needs to slow. JD Vance has framed the pitch bluntly, saying these companies are 'begging the government to regulate them.' The sharper edge of that remark is what has not accompanied the appeals: any concrete step, taken by the companies themselves or by the governments they appeal to, that would genuinely decelerate the AI race.
The proof problem is straightforward. If the biggest names in AI believe frontier models are advancing faster than is prudent, the clearest demonstration would be a delayed release — a flagship model held back, with the decision announced and explained to the public. No such model delay has materialized. 'Slower' remains an aspiration without an operational definition, and that is precisely the discrepancy Vance's comment exposes.
The dynamic also explains why the appeals strike skeptics as hollow. Regulation is something companies request of governments; deceleration is something companies do themselves. A lab can endorse oversight while continuing to ship at full cadence, and every competitor faces pressure to match rather than trail the frontier. Under those incentives, caution rhetoric coexists comfortably with an unchanged development pace — and the race rolls on.
For now, the industry's stated position and its observable behavior point in opposite directions: chief executives advocate restraint, yet no company has shown what restraint would look like in practice. Until a frontier model is actually delayed — or a government forces a pause — Vance's characterization will continue to land, because the public record so far supports it. The burden of proof now sits with the executives calling for a slowdown to demonstrate that they mean it.
