Steve Yegge's X question on juggling 10-20 coding agents drew 600-plus replies, exposing homemade dashboards, urgency shortcuts and an industry with no settled answer.
When Steve Yegge wanted advice on juggling 10 to 20 or more coding agents at once, he took the question directly to X, conceding that his own editor is Emacs — "I use Emacs, and I wouldn't wish it on you," he wrote. The replies now number more than 600, and they recommend an unruly spread of options: Herdr, cmux and Conductor, the Claude and Codex desktop apps, and a striking volume of homemade software.
For anyone hoping the industry had converged on a sensible way to work with software agents, the thread is a dose of reality: it plainly has not. There is no default cockpit for agent-driven development, only a scattergun of early tools and personal workarounds.
The most revealing signals in the replies are not which environments developers picked, but what they have bolted onto those tools to compensate for the technology's gaps. The additions cluster around the same needs: shortcuts that surface the agent waiting on a decision, ways to recover an earlier conversation, and groupings that explain where a task fits within a broader project. In other words, even with extraordinary intelligence now available to help write code, developers are still fighting to automate something far simpler — keeping track of what they asked the AI to do in the first place. The ecosystem has made generating work dramatically easier without making it any easier to absorb and finish that work.
The replies illustrate the pattern in detail. Mark Jaquith runs Herdr behind a custom interface that jumps him straight to whichever agent needs his attention. Kai Backman is working on a keyboard shortcut designed to deliver him to the "next most relevant place to take action." Jacob Voytko, meanwhile, is among the many respondents who have built their own tooling rather than wait for a standard to emerge. Until a shared solution appears, the de facto IDE for agentic AI looks set to remain a patchwork of individual inventions.
