With Brent around $105-$110 and the 10-year pressing 5%, the S&P 500 sits near its August high while growth multiples face the largest remaining repricing.
A macro squeeze is taking shape that this bull market has largely managed to sidestep: Brent crude trading near $110 a barrel, the 10-year Treasury yield pressing against the 5% mark, and a Federal Reserve debating whether to raise rates sooner rather than later. Despite those pressures, the S&P 500 sits only a few percentage points beneath its August high — a gap that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
For most of the past two years, the playbook was reliable: whenever growth weakened or market stress flared, investors came to expect easier policy, which gave them a fresh reason to buy the dip. Oil above $100 inverts that logic. Elevated crude squeezes consumers while keeping inflation pressure alive, leaving the Fed with less room to offset softer growth. The next correction, therefore, does not require an earnings collapse — the same earnings simply become worth less as the risk-free rate moves toward 5%, producing very different setups across AI, energy and consumer stocks.
Crucially, the market has not repriced every part of this shock equally. Energy stocks have already responded forcefully to the move in crude, while the broader equity market remains close to record territory and many high-growth names still trade on multiples established under a far friendlier rate environment.
That asymmetry suggests the next leg may not be another simple rotation from technology into oil. If Brent stabilizes around $105 while the 10-year finally breaks 5%, the larger remaining repricing could come through growth multiples rather than another surge in energy shares. For investors exposed to AI and other long-duration equities, the pairing of triple-digit crude and 5% bond yields amounts to a trap: the headline index looks resilient, yet the corner of the market carrying the most rate-sensitive valuations holds the largest remaining repricing.
