Q2 add-in-board shipments hit their highest level since Q1 2022 despite rising prices and falling desktop PC sales, with Nvidia taking 90 percent share, per Jon Peddie Research.
Desktop graphics card shipments reached 12.5 million units in the second quarter, marking the strongest quarter for add-in-board deliveries since Q1 2022, according to new figures from Jon Peddie Research. The total represents a four-year high for the segment, and it was achieved despite two headwinds: graphics card prices that continue to rise and desktop PC sales that keep falling. Add-in-boards, or AIBs, are the discrete graphics cards purchased separately from prebuilt desktop systems.
The demand surge is being driven largely by timing. Gamers rushed to complete their purchases ahead of looming price spikes, according to the reporting on the data, pulling sales forward into the quarter even as costs climbed. That buying urgency helped shipment volumes buck both the pricing environment and the broader weakness across the desktop PC market, where sales continue to drop.
Nvidia's dominance in the add-in-board market remains near-total. The company took 90 percent of desktop graphics card shipments in the quarter, leaving rival vendors to compete for the remaining 10 percent. For the GPU market, that level of concentration means a single vendor's pricing and product decisions effectively set the terms for the entire desktop graphics segment.
The divergence between the quarter's AIB surge and declining desktop PC sales underscores how discrete graphics are decoupling from overall PC market health. With prices rising rather than falling, the Q2 result suggests demand held up because buyers acted preemptively. Jon Peddie Research's numbers indicate the desktop graphics card market is operating at its highest shipment level in four years, even as the PCs that house those cards sell in declining numbers.
