The proprietary trading firm now prioritizes better AI models over pure latency, owning everything from applications to custom hardware, with incentives that diverge from typical tech companies.
Optiver, the proprietary trading company, has long been associated with latency-obsessed engineering, where microseconds matter. A new examination of the firm's software engineering practices by Pragmatic Engineer describes a meaningful pivot: the organization's focus is shifting away from latency alone and toward building better AI models. For a field where speed has historically been the defining metric, the reorientation marks a notable evolution in how trading firms deploy engineering resources.
The most striking element of the report is the scope of vertical integration. Optiver owns its full technology stack, from the applications layer at the top down to designing and building custom hardware at the bottom. Few organizations attempt that degree of ownership, and it places the trading firm closer in engineering posture to vertically integrated technology companies than to conventional financial IT departments. In practice, the firm controls the entire pipeline that turns silicon into trading decisions.
Equally consequential are the incentives described as being in play. According to the report, the incentive structures at Optiver are very different from those at most technology companies. That distinction shapes engineering culture and capital allocation alike: when a firm's returns depend on its own trading performance rather than on selling products, choices about investing in custom hardware or AI model development follow a different logic than they do inside big tech.
For AI compute buyers and investors, the broader takeaway is that sophisticated buyers outside the technology sector are pushing deeper into the stack. A trading firm that builds its own AI models while also constructing custom hardware represents both a demand signal for advanced silicon and a technically demanding counterparty for hardware vendors. If peers follow the path Optiver describes, expect this class of customer to arrive with unusually deep engineering requirements of its own.
