Mystery 'BFC' Suffix Splits Intel's Leaked 28-Core Nova Lake Desktop Lineup

A seven-chip leak by @laurentschoice shows bLLC cache, not raw core counts, dividing Intel's top desktop SKUs — and trims the 4950K to 24 cores after August's 28-core CPU-Z sighting.

The most telling detail in a fresh leak of Intel's unannounced Nova Lake-S desktop processors may not be the 28-core flagship at the top of the stack — it is the three-letter suffix stamped on exactly the models that carry the company's new oversized cache.

Posted by leaker @laurentschoice, the list lays out seven desktop Nova Lake-S parts under what looks like a new four-digit Core Ultra 4000 naming scheme. The Core Ultra 9 4970K BFC tops it with 8 P-cores, 16 E-cores and 4 LPE cores — 28 in all — plus bLLC (big last-level cache), a 125 W rating and a 32 EU integrated GPU.

The second tier is where this leak collides with an earlier one. The Core Ultra 9 4950K first surfaced in August through a CPU-Z leak as a 28-core chip; the new roster instead credits it with 24 cores, built from 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores, and strips away both the LPE cores and the bLLC. Nothing in either leak explains the discrepancy, and Intel has said nothing at all. Until the company speaks, Nova Lake's pre-launch specifications remain a moving target.

Lower down, the stack splits along the same line. The Core Ultra 7 4870K BFC carries 24 cores plus bLLC, while its 4850K sibling falls to 20 cores without the extra cache. A Core Ultra 9 4900 BFC slots in at 22 cores with bLLC and a 65 W rating, well below the 4970K's 125 W envelope.

As for what BFC actually stands for, nobody outside Intel appears to know yet. The pattern is hard to miss, though: in this listing, the models bearing the suffix are the same ones equipped with bLLC — the big last-level cache Intel is introducing as its answer to AMD's 3D V-Cache.

None of these designations are confirmed. Intel has not acknowledged any of the names, and they may well change before Nova Lake reaches an official launch.
