IBM and NASA have jointly unveiled the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, an open-source artificial intelligence system built to analyze petabytes of observations accumulated over decades of moon missions. The model's stated objective is to help locate water on the lunar surface — a resource the collaboration's framing treats as central to keeping future explorers alive up there.
Unlike many enterprise AI releases, this model is fully public. It is hosted on Hugging Face, with its accompanying codebase published on GitHub, giving researchers worldwide direct access to both the trained model and the tooling around it. The open release positions the system as a shared community resource for lunar science rather than a proprietary asset locked inside either organization.
The technical problem the model targets is data fragmentation. Lunar science produces complex, multi-sensor datasets drawn from many instruments and mission eras, and researchers previously lacked a unified tool for processing them together. By training a single foundation model on this corpus, IBM and NASA provide a common analytical layer capable of interpreting heterogeneous lunar observations within one framework, rather than forcing teams to stitch together bespoke pipelines for each sensor type.
