Microsoft Confirms Windows Bug Falsely Flags Defender Antivirus as Disabled After Update

A recent Defender update triggered bogus 'turned off' alerts across Windows and Windows Server, with Microsoft confirming a fix will arrive in a future antivirus update.

Windows 11 machines that received the most recent Microsoft Defender Antivirus update have begun displaying a warning that reads 'Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned off.' The alert is misleading: antivirus protection continues to run as intended, with no actual change to endpoint security. The wave of false alarms was documented by TechPowerUp, whose staff members encountered the erroneous notification on many of their own systems after applying the update.

According to user reports, the notifications tend to surface right at boot or in the moments immediately following startup. More aggravating still, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is able to deliver these alerts even when Windows notification settings for the product have been switched off, leaving no simple configuration path to silence the spurious warnings. The alerts thus appear even though the antivirus engine's real protection state remains unchanged.

The problem is not confined to consumer machines. Every version of Windows, and all versions of Windows Server, are affected by the faulty reporting — effectively the entire installed base of the operating system rather than a single release channel. For organizations running large fleets, a stream of inaccurate 'antivirus disabled' messages complicates the picture for administrators who rely on those alerts to distinguish genuine security configuration failures from noise.

Microsoft has acknowledged the bug. In a statement, the company said it is 'working to release a resolution in a future Microsoft Defender Antivirus update' and pledged to 'provide more information when it is available.' Until that fix ships, the warnings can be treated as cosmetic — the underlying protection remains active, and the notifications misstate the actual security posture of the system.
