Defender platform update 4.18.26080.4, released September 17, ends weeks of bogus Windows Security warnings claiming the antivirus was disabled despite all protections running.
Microsoft has shipped a remedy for the Windows Security glitch that falsely reported Microsoft Defender Antivirus as switched off. As reported by Windows Latest, the correction arrived in Defender platform update 4.18.26080.4, which the company published on September 17. Users need not intervene: the patch installs automatically, unless mandatory security updates have been blocked through Group Policy or the Registry Editor.
The nuisance alert tended to appear when a machine booted, then resurfaced unpredictably — even on systems where notifications had been switched off entirely. Tapping the notification accomplished little: it deposited users on the Windows Security home page, where every protection module displayed as active.
Microsoft acknowledged the fault on August 28, stating that it affected any supported version of Windows or Windows Server carrying the newest Defender updates. The company never identified which specific update introduced the misbehavior. Complicating matters for administrators, Defender updates ship daily, meaning there is no single KB package that can be rolled back to isolate or reverse the problem.
The defect's history stretches further back than its official record implies: Windows Insider users apparently encountered similar warnings from at least June onward. TechPowerUp reported on the alert when it first came to light, and several of the outlet's own staff members ran into it on their machines.
Notably, close to three weeks elapsed between Microsoft's confirmation and the corrective release — a turnaround that looks sluggish for a bug this visible, particularly one touching the security layer of every supported Windows and Windows Server deployment receiving current Defender updates.
