A new Seagate survey shows nearly all IT leaders anticipate AI-driven storage growth, yet fewer than four in ten say their organizations can handle the coming data load.
A Seagate study highlighted by ZDNet puts numbers on a widening gap between AI ambition and storage readiness. Ninety-nine percent of IT leaders surveyed expect AI to drive increased data storage needs, yet only 38 percent say they are prepared to meet them. In other words, roughly six in ten enterprises — 62 percent — cannot currently handle the storage demands their AI initiatives are expected to create.
The near-universal expectation of storage growth makes the preparedness figure more consequential, not less. When 99 percent of respondents point the same direction and fewer than four in ten feel equipped, storage ceases to be a routine line item and becomes a potential choke point for enterprise AI programs. The findings imply that for most enterprises, AI adoption is outpacing the underlying data infrastructure that must support it.
The timing gives the numbers added weight. Per ZDNet's reporting, businesses are finally seeing return on investment from AI — precisely the stage at which infrastructure pressure compounds. Workloads that deliver value tend to expand, and the data they generate must be stored, protected and made available for further training and inference. Enterprises celebrating early AI wins may therefore be the same ones confronting the sharpest capacity shortfalls.
For storage vendors and AI-compute buyers alike, the survey functions as a demand signal. If nearly the entire respondent base expects AI to expand storage estates while only about a third feels equipped, capacity planning is likely to move up the corporate agenda — from routine procurement to board-level infrastructure strategy. The figures suggest that for many enterprises, readiness rather than ambition will be the limiting factor in scaling AI beyond initial successes.
