A Verge report says Halo Studios' next entry was years from release, prompting Xbox to hand the franchise to Activision and leave just 20 developers behind.
The situation at Xbox and Halo Studios has dominated gaming headlines in recent weeks. Xbox has formally shifted stewardship of the next Halo game away from Halo Studios, announcing that Activision will lead development while a "small team" remains at the original studio to assist. Subsequent reporting put the size of that retained group at just 20 employees. Alongside the reorganization, Activision is rebooting the franchise, with little to no semblance of Halo's original history slated for the next installment.
A report from The Verge now supplies the apparent justification for that clean-slate approach: the next Halo being developed under Halo Studios was years away from shipping. Separately, ubiquitous leakers within the Halo scene report that several internal projects have been cancelled at the studio — a roster that includes remakes of Halo 2 and 3 alongside Halo 7.
The cancellation list is striking given how far along some of that work reportedly was: Halo 7 appears to have already been in development when the decision was made. Even so, Activision has opted to start from scratch rather than build on those foundations, and is assembling a specialized team that will be in charge of the next Halo game.
For followers of the Xbox portfolio, the practical takeaway is timing: even with a dedicated Activision-led organization now in place, it appears the earliest a new Halo game can be expected is 2030. Until then, the franchise's future rests entirely with Activision's reboot, supported by a 20-person assist unit at the studio that once owned the series outright.
