UKAEA and PPPL to Explore Linking SUNRISE and STELLAR-AI Fusion Supercomputers

UKAEA and the US Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory will explore linking their SUNRISE and STELLAR-AI supercomputers under a joint federation.

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the US Department of Energy's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) have signed a Joint Declaration of Intent to explore linking their flagship computing systems. Under the agreement, dated September 14, 2026, the two research bodies will study connecting UKAEA's SUNRISE supercomputer with PPPL's STELLAR-AI platform through a partnership known as the SUNRISE–STELLAR-AI Federation.

UKAEA announced the deal, which was signed at the Global Fusion Policy Summit, held at Mansion House in London on the same day. The venue underscored the political weight behind the initiative: rather than a quiet technical side arrangement, the federation was unveiled before a policy-focused audience gathered in London.

For the AI infrastructure community, the interesting part is the delivery model. The two laboratories are not proposing new machines; the declaration covers whether existing national-lab systems can be operated as one federated resource, with workloads and data crossing institutional and national boundaries. If the exploration succeeds, the SUNRISE–STELLAR-AI Federation would stand as a template for scientific AI capacity shared between allies rather than duplicated — a model other publicly funded compute operators will be watching closely.

As a declaration of intent, the agreement stops short of operational commitments: it obliges the parties to explore, not to switch on a live link, and questions of scope, governance and timing remain for the work that follows. Even so, the London signing is a marker of where publicly funded AI compute is heading, with fusion — a field whose simulations have long strained national supercomputers — positioned as a test case for transatlantic infrastructure sharing.
